Answer key

Accept the scientific word; the extra notes are the reason behind each answer, for going over it with a student.

1. The flowering plant

Answers: A = flower · B = leaf · C = stem · D = root
Why: Parts to accept: petal/flower; leaf/leaves; stem; root/roots.

2. The water cycle

Answers: A = the Sun · B = evaporation · C = condensation · D = precipitation (rain) · E = the sea
Why: The Sun heats the water so it evaporates into water vapour; the vapour rises, cools and condenses into water droplets that form the cloud; the drops grow heavy and fall as rain.

3. The circuit

Answers: A = battery (cell) · B = bulb · C = switch · D = wire
Why: The switch closes the circuit so current can flow; the battery pushes the current round; the bulb lights.

4. The magnets

Answers: A = north pole (N) · B = south pole (S) · C = attraction · D = repulsion
Why: Unlike poles (N and S) attract; like poles (N and N, or S and S) repel. Only a magnet can repel another magnet.

5. The life cycle

Answers: A = egg · B = larva (caterpillar) · C = pupa · D = adult butterfly
Why: Four stages, because the young does not look like the adult. The butterfly has a four-stage life cycle: egg → larva → pupa → adult.

6. The respiratory system

Answers: A = nose · B = windpipe · C = lung
Why: Air enters through the nose, travels down the windpipe and into the lungs, where oxygen passes into the blood and carbon dioxide leaves it.
