Adaptations
Structural (a physical feature) or behavioural (what the animal does)
Camouflage, eyespots and toxins keep an organism alive
Thick fur, blubber and large ears cope with heat and cold
Environment
Living factors: producers, consumers, decomposers
Non-living factors: temperature, water, air, light and soil
Organism → population → community; pond and mangrove swamp have their own communities
Environmental Interactions
Food chain: producer → primary → secondary → tertiary consumer
Energy is lost at each level, so there are more producers than consumers
Three relationships: predator-prey, competition, mutualism
Forces
Contact or non-contact; a force can move, stop or change the shape of an object
Balanced forces → no change; unbalanced forces → motion changes
Mass is the amount of matter; weight is the gravitational pull, in newtons (N)
Man and the Environment
Deforestation, pollution and global warming are man-made impacts
Non-renewable resources (eg. fossil fuel and nuclear fuel) can be depleted
Reduce, reuse, recycle — reducing is the most effective
Photosynthesis
Needs light energy, carbon dioxide and water; produces sugar and oxygen
Chlorophyll traps light energy; excess sugar is turned into starch and stored
Test for it: destarch in the dark for 48 hours, then iodine turns dark blue
Energy
Kinetic (the energy of motion) and potential (stored energy)
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted
Measured in joules (J); renewable (Sun, water, wind) and non-renewable (fossil fuels)
