Classifying Animals
Grouped by what you can observe — covering, breathing, reproduction, body temperature
Vertebrates have a backbone; invertebrates do not
eg. mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects
Classifying Plants
Flowering plants reproduce by seeds; non-flowering plants (eg. ferns and mosses) by spores
Leaves are compared by shape, edge and vein pattern
Stems are strong (the plant holds itself up) or weak (it clings or crawls)
Fungi and Bacteria
They cannot make their own food — they obtain it from other dead or living things
Fungi: mushroom, mould and yeast
Both can be useful (bread, medicine) or harmful
Materials
The five properties: strength, flexibility, absorbency, floating or sinking, light passing through
Transparent, translucent or opaque
A material is chosen by matching its properties to the job
Life Cycles of Plants
Seed → young plant → adult plant → seeds again
The seed coat protects the seed; the seed leaf stores food
The root appears first when the seed germinates
Life Cycles of Animals
Three stages (egg → nymph → adult) or four (egg → larva → pupa → adult)
Only animals whose young do not resemble the adult have four stages — except the frog

Magnets
A magnet pushes or pulls; unlike poles attract and like poles repel
Only a magnet can repel another magnet
Make one by stroking it with a magnet, or by passing a current through a coil
A freely suspended magnet comes to rest in the north-south direction
